Hi Everyone,
I wanted to pop in and update you on some *new* indoor and outdoor events added to our family-friendly guides, including Nature Everywhere collaborations that kicked off this morning!
A special thank you to Madison Public Library, Autumn DeMet with Nature Everywhere and Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Christie Moser with Naturing in Madison, Storytelling Naturalist Coral Conant Gilles, and Leslie Cao from LC Babywearing! You can view all the details for these free events here!

Here are some of the events I’m excited to be part of this fall! Save the dates, and I hope to see you there!
- Birding with Babies at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Alicia Ashman Library. I’ll be reading some picture books and leading caregivers and kiddos on a short walk looking for signs of fall, birds, and other critters on the trails behind the library. Leslie with LC Babywearing will join us later for carrier fit checks and tips! (Free).
- Trail Tuesday on the Ice Age Trail led by Leslie from LC Babywearing. Leslie is holding free events each Tuesday at 9 a.m., and I’ll be joining her for an optional photo add-on with you and your kiddo on Oct. 28 at the Valley View Segment. (Free to attend, $30 optional photo add-on with a portion of proceeds supporting the Ice Age Trail Alliance).
- Lil’ Explorer Pop-Up Play Cafe from 9-11 a.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 29 and Dec. 10 with and at the Lussier Family Heritage Center. We’ll be indoors and outdoors for these fun events geared toward caregivers and kids ages 0-5 ($10/child age 1+, register).
- Waverly Braves the Breeze reading and nature-themed activity at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Meadowridge Library. I’m excited to share my debut picture book with you! (Free to attend, $20 cash or Venmo for optional book purchase).
I have made many more updates to the guides below, including those just for adults. I’ll be attending the Nov. 15th writing retreat in Spring Green co-led by my friend Jeanne, and the early bird registration deadline is Oct. 15th. Hope you can join us!

Your local library!
I am grateful for all of you. And I hope some of these resources and upcoming gatherings can introduce you to or further connect you with the Madison area community. You are not alone.
Here’s the origin story of this monthly In A Nutshell e-leaflet, which highlights local events for families with young kids in the Madison, WI area, plus other community resources and my own musings as a toddler mom. Recently, I’ve added a second newsletter a month called On The Bookshelf, which is all about my children’s picture book journey and recommendations. Soon, I’ll be adding a third newsletter Through the Viewfinder (though probably not monthly) that will feature my digital nature photos, some of which will be turned into greeting cards available for purchase with a portion of proceeds donated to local environmental nonprofits. So, if you support nature, books, kids, and community, this Under the Drumlin Sun publication is probably the place for you! Thanks for stopping by!

As always, thank you for being part of a community who shares this common thread:
At Playful Acorns, we value the following be(leafs):
- Nature benefits from diversity, and so does humanity.
- Children learn best through play.
- Everyone deserves to have fun and be respected.
- Life is a journey, and we are always growing.
- The world is a better place with you in it.
In gratitude,
- Sam
